Really awesome branding project I got to work on for @baltsymphony. This month, we have a selection of programs centered around Jazz. I researched, developed, and produced the branding, print and digital production for the grouping of concerts. I drew inspiration from Baltimore’s jazz history, including Left Bank Jazz Society and Famous Ballroom. I also looked at designers Romere Bearden, Paul Rand, Reid Miles and David Carson.

Come see the short film “mouse” I Artistic Directed on the big screen Tuesday, May 2nd at 9pm at the Clarvit Courtyard (On the side of the UMD Art Sociology Building) and the accompanying installation in the Herman Maril Gallery (ASY 1st Floor, next to the woodshop)

I’ve been working on this short film for almost 3 years now and it’s finally coming to a close. Run time 20 minutes. It’s kinda a horror mystery story narrative David Lynchian vibe about a hiker retelling a story of a monster encounter in the woods and a girl auditioning on a Euphonium piece. Come check it out.

“No Child Left” Sadat Art for Peace Juried Exhibition, 2nd Place

Artist Statement:

“‘No Child Left’ is a diptych exploring the American desensitization to gun violence, specifically regarding the impact of gun violence in educational settings. Gun violence turns a classroom from sanctuary to battlefield. It turns desks from apparatuses of intrigue and creativity into fortresses.
I am a part of the generation that participated in active shooter drills in the middle of math class. The generation that was told by my psychology teacher that he moved the bookshelves over by the door so we could easily push them and have two layers of textbooks between us and a bullet coming through the door. The generation that knows how line our desks up and curl up small to shield ourselves from metal with wooden desks and paper books.

I am part of the generation that is so desensitized to mass shootings that I can easily stomach my breakfast while reading about one in the morning news.
But I am also part of a generation that isn’t taking this bullsh*t anymore. We fought for our lives while I was in school just under four years ago. And now we fight for the lives of those still there.”

Not so fun fact: I actually created these pieces back in high school for my AP art concentration as part of 12 digital art pieces about gun violence. Really disheartening that it is still so relevant now.

Plaster cast statue for my 3D final. I’m definitely a designer at heart but I’ve enjoyed working with my hands and exploring the ~ third ~ dimension this semester.

It’s been a ridiculously difficult year. But hey, if I can figure out how to still make full scale art while living in a singular room, I think I can figure out how to make art anywhere. Although I enjoyed it and learned a lot, I’m excited to be moving away from my Studio Arts education to joining UMD’s Graphic Design Concentration this fall.

Big thank you to my friend who let me smear Vaseline and plaster all over her face, arms and shirt. Also to my wonderful documentation partners 📷 who helped me carry this into the woods and to the CSC at midnight. And of course my lovely roommate for putting up with this (and the subsequent mess) of it being in our suite and lending me her phone camera.
